Newcomer of the Week: Sommarboken

When people get tired of something repetitive and common, they tend to go back to where they've started. Something they are comfortable in, something that gives them soul.

And in this age of digital photography, one can’t help but get bored knowing there could be no challenge next. Fortunately, they don’t stop but instead, they look back to what is pure, simple, and lovely — the process which is film photography.

That was just the case for this week’s featured newcomer. She grabbed a vintage camera, some film, started snapping, and from there decided to never look back. Fellas, let us meet this lady from Finland, Maija or LomoHome sommarboken.

Name: Maija Kakriainen
Lomography Home: http://www.lomography.com/homes/sommarboken
Location: Finland
Current film cameras: Holga 120 GCFN, Canon EOS Rebel G, Mamiya M Time Memory, Kodak Instamatic 25, Agfa Autostar X-126

How did you find out about the Community and who/what convinced you to join?

I had no idea that there was a whole Community dedicated to the Lomography awesomeness until I found the Online Shop while browsing the net in order to find a place to buy Lomography film. After that I didn’t need more convincing!

Any inspirations when it comes to taking film photographs?

I think the thing to inspire me the most is light (and the lack of it) because in some restrictive way, it makes me reconsider my visions and think outside the box.

Any song or movie you live by?

Although I tend to watch a lot of films I’m not quite sure if I live by any of them. But a song, oh yes! Butterflies and Hurricanes by Muse has been one of my favourite songs for forever and I think the lyrics have helped me through a lot of struggle.

As you have read the 10 Golden Rules of Lomography, what rule do you apply in your everyday life?

More or less all of them. But my favourite is the one about taking your camera everywhere you go because if you don’t have your camera with you, the rest of the rules becomes kind of pointless.

In this digital age, why still film?

Before I started experimenting with film I had been shooting digital for seven years and grown a bit tired of it. Surrounded by megapixels and immaculate digital files, I felt really uninspired. Everything changed when I bought my first film camera: photography became fun again. I fell in love with the feeling of freedom and the idea of not knowing what you were going to get. The ability to capture a soul in a photo is something that I think digital cameras don’t have and that’s why film will always be superior to them.

What are you looking forward to in our Community?

I love browsing photos by other people and I’m really looking forward to finding new masterpieces that give me great inspiration. And even though I’m not very fond of being around people, I would love to get to know some of you guys because I think you’re great and really creative.

Your favorite analogue camera as of the moment? Why?

Well, I must admit I love my Rebel G so much that I named it after James Dean… I know people often say it’s a cheap camera with poor quality, but hey, I like the poor quality.

What is the Lomographic camera you’d want to have someday?

All of them? First of all I’d like to have the Holga 135 BC because the combination of a Holga and 35mm film is very intriguing.

Your favorite section or page in our Lomography site?

Definitely the photo section, more specifically the page where you can sort photos by the country where they were taken. It doesn’t ease my aching wanderlust, though!

Share your current favorite Lomograph.. Why?

I came across this photo the other day and it took my breath away. I think it might be one of the most beautiful photographs I’ve ever seen: the movement, the light and the colours work so well together that it looks like magic.
