LomoGuru of the Week: Yokekei

"It's the little moments that count." That's the philosophy our LomoGuru for the week lives by. And with that, she makes sure that every moment is captured on film.

She likes remembering life’s tiny moments, the moments we usually take for granted. For her, these are the ones we should put importance to because these are all part of history. We just can’t disagree with her because she has got a point. And with her Lomographs that show almost every waking day of her life, all we can do is look and appreciate.

I’m pretty sure you are familiar of this LomoGuru from Malaysia so read on our interview with yokekei!

Location: Malaysia
Number of years as a Lomographer: 4.5 years
Number of years in the Community: 3.5 years

Tell us something about your LomoHome’s name.

My LomoHome’s name is my name, Yoke Kei. I couldn’t think of another name for my LomoHome at this moment. I still prefer to use my name, yokekei as my LomoHome name. This is because all these Lomographs represent ne. My LomoHome is one of the great channels to get know who I am and what I have done.

Share to us your most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community.

The most memorable experience in the Lomographic Community is when I won my first photography contest through the “Seoul All Around You” rumble in the Lomography International market. After that, there were so many great things that happened to me such as being selected as LomoHome of the Day, my article being Article of the Week, and winning othe competitions. I did learn a lot of tips and techniques through the Lomography Magazine especially in the Tipster section. I would like to say a big THANKS to Lomography who did not only give us a web sharing space but has also launched galleries, shops, and labs in many countries to keep the analogue life alive.

Have you actually met people in the Community that you now consider as close friends?

Nope. But some of the Community members have become my friends on Facebook and we always share photography tips, techniques and information. Some of them are jetnz81 from Tawau, mont0417 from Sabah and jarodfwh who always helps me in purchasing cheap films for me and friends.

Do you think you’ll still be taking Lomographs in the next five years? Why?

I can’t 100% promise that I will keep on doing this in the next five years but I truly wish that I can do this in my whole life because it has been my great partner in the past few years until today. I felt that I was too late to [for me] meet this hobby and I really hope I can do better in the future.

What is your favorite Lomo camera and why? Do you have any memorable experiences while using this camera?

I do really like the SuperSampler. It is really fun and unique. Plus, it is a camera and also can be a movie maker. I take this camera with me during gathering with family and friends. Everyone were so curious and excited while I was explaining the uniqueness of this camera. Everyone is ready for “action” with this little camera.

Please share your most favourite Lomographic photo that you took and explain why.

This photo records an important day, an important person, and the happiness between him and me.

Please share a Lomograph you wish you took and explain why.

A little moment from an everyday life. We always wish for “planned” romance and surprises such as candle light dinners at five-starred restaurants surrounded by a great night city view with a luxurious honeymoon trip. But we always forget about every single little moment, like the care that our partner/family/friends give to us daily. For example, when your husband says a simple “thanks” or gives a sweet kiss to his wife for a home-cooked dinner. Or children giving hand-drew cards to their parents. All these little things that happen everyday should be recorded on photo because all these little moments are part of history.

What’s the best Lomographic or photography advice you think you have given?

“The camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” by Dorothea Lange. [Ed: Not by her but her favourite, most probably.]

If there’s one song or movie that best describes your Lomo life, what is that and why?

My favourite song, “Ring My Bells” by Enrique Iglesias. You will get what I mean after you listen to it. :)

Is there any advice you can give to new analogue shooters?

Please do not hesitate to make your first step in the analogue world. Do not worry too much about the film, developing, and scanning costs. Forget about the results either they are a success or fail. The most important thing is to grab a roll of film, load it into your analogue camera, and shoot! You will know what to do next after this. Remember, do not give up and keep on trying! Lastly, do not hesitate to ask the Community members when you are facing any photography problems. They are always willing to answer you with patience!

Do you think you’re qualified as a LomoGuru? Got something to share in our Community? Then drop me a line at mayee.gonzales@lomography.com and you might become the next LomoGuru!
