The 00th Frame: The Wonderful Beginning of An Analogue Journey

For any kind of manual film-advance analogue camera, the 00th frame of a film always paints a surprising beginning. You probably do not enjoy such privilege if you are a digital or auto film-advance camera user, so you might want to read about it!

After having a short section of film loaded in the camera and closed the back, I always carefully advance the frame by turning the wheel, and listen to the crispy clicks, to ensure the film does not loose itself off from the spool. This is my habit so that I could expose the 00th frame of the film. However, this habit carries some risk, most of the time, I will still sacrifice the precious 00th frame.

The irregular burning edge is the characteristic of the exposed 00th frame. The interesting exposed results has never failed to surprised me, as they are produced randomly and could not be imagined. Sometimes I would even plan to write some words on the over-exposed side of photo, to record the feeling while the photos were taken.

The 00th frame has always been neglected, because it wasn’t taken with careful composition. Sometimes, it was exposed without focal settings. But after exposing many rolls of 00th frames, I realized that I have been rather sloppy and indifferent to my cameras and films. Whenever the camera is loaded with film, it is ready to serve you as a loyal partner for a recording device. It taught me that I should change my attitude towards photography, to cherish the camera, and every frame of the film.

    Lovely article :)
Admins, is there a reason why I can't see the translate button on this article? No problems with other articles.

@math0165: O shit, now I see you're from Leuven, so you propably wanted to translate it into Dutch, right? I'm sorry! I kind of translated it allready. I should have checked before, I didn't mean to get in your way. :(

@stratski : Haha, don't worry about it, it's quite alright :P Tbh, I was dreading translating this article, seemed like one of those where it's really hard capturing the same feeling and spirit in Dutch, well, for me anyway, so I'm pretty sure you did a better job of it.

@vincent6251 Sometimes the 00th frame in a roll turns out to be unexpectedly poignant. Check out this Little Drawings project on film burned photos: http://www.lomograph(…)rned-photos
