Midweek Movies is back with the spotlight on the 2009 sleeper hit, (500) Days of Summer starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel.
“This is a story of boy meets girl; but you should know upfront, this is not a love story.”
- Days of Summer* is a 2009 comedy drama starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the protagonist Tom Hansen, a young aspiring architect who believes in the concept of true love, and Zooey Deschanel as Summer Finn, the object of his affections who unfortunately does not share the same sentiment.
Based on a real-life romance and told using a non-linear narrative structure, the film revolves around the meeting, the romance, the eventual break-up, and the aftermath of Tom and Summer. Despite its familiar premise, the film deviates from the standard formula provided by other romantic comedies, and depicts a relationship that most of us has probably experienced.
“I’ve had my heart broken before. Truly, truly broken. But when I look back at me in my heartbroken phase, it’s pretty hilarious, because it felt so much more extreme than it really was. One of the things I love about (500) Days of Summer is that it doesn’t make light of what we go through in romances, but it is honest about it and shows it for what it is, which is often profoundly funny.” — Joseph Gordon-Levitt
