Stop Motion Sunday: My Strange Grandfather by Dina Velikovskaya

Making a great film takes a lot of dedication. Making a stop-motion film takes even more. Which is why every Sunday starting today, we would be featuring videos that showcase this wonderful technique so we can give them the love that they deserve!

To start things off, here is a delightful short film made by Dina Velikovskaya, a student from the Russian State University of Cinematography.

Inspired by the traditional puppet animation (an art-form that has waned in popularity in Russia over the years), My Strange Grandfather is a magical story about a young girl and her eccentric grandfather. She is perpetually embarrassed and exasperated with him, but she eventually experiences a change of heart after one magical night.

While the short film certainly has a child-like quality to it, Dina admits that she did not start making the video with children in mind. “It’s [just] only what I want to say to the world,” she says.
