My Analogue Days: Books and Lomowalks

Especially for city-dwellers, a fast-paced lifestyle has made our digital 'companions' necessities in our daily routine. By injecting a little analogue in our life, we get to slow down and enjoy the little things in life. For me, it's books and cameras!

I own a smartphone, I own a laptop, and I also own an iPod. These little gadgets have become many a person’s necessary digital companion — it relieves us when we’re bored during the commute to and from work. It helps us stay connected, it makes doing our assignments and getting our work done possible. Our music is now digitized; along with movies and even books, photography has for awhile been in the electronic domain.

Meeting in the middle has always appealed to me — I now listen to digital music while enjoying a good book; isn’t that an ideal balance between both the analogue and the digital world?

Going on Lomowalks can also help in neutralizing a life steeped in the digital. With such a simple device in your hands — plastic and needing nothing more than a roll of 35mm film — you focus more on the real and less on the “surreal”; you leave aside the electronic world of social media and apps on your mobile device, even if just for a little while.

These “simple devices” — my toy cameras — also help me keep analogue memories and records by capturing snippets of my daily life in film.

And it’s always fulfilling when you know you inject a little analogue in the lives’ of people close to you as well. Whipping out analogue cameras in a sea of digital SLRs and smartphone cameras, you can be sure to draw at least a trickle of nostalgia from your friends and family!

How do you inject a little analogue into your daily routine?
