Perfect Combination: Holga and Kodak Ektachrome 100 GX

The vignetting and focus of the Holga pair wonderfully with the enhanced contrast and hyperreality of expired Kodak Ektachrome 100 GX to form a match made in heaven.

It was only when I read the title of this requested post that it struck me.

I’m not particularly consistent with the films and cameras I shoot, I have many cameras, and I have a fridge devoted to film, full of 120 and 35mm expired slide film.

I have drawers and a cupboard full of cameras, toy, plastic and antique.

What struck me was I have no particular favourite camera/film combinations except for one.

Whenever I get out my Holga TLR, nine time out of ten I will fill it with Kodak Ektachrome 100 GX.

It started right at the beginning of my Lomography journey. The Holga was one of my first cameras and Kodak Ektachrome 100 GX was my first x-pro 120 slide film.

Later that year I tried some night time effects, some Bulb shots with the same film…

Once more, the Holga was my camera of choice for a trip to the beach. I shot two films, x-pro and E-6.

I pulled out the Holga the other day, and found that there was a film in it with a few shots left. I knew I’d accidentally shot it in Bulb mode, which would ruin the shots, with three left to go I contemplated throwing the film away and saving the development costs. I’m glad I didn’t as the three left may just be my best shots from the shoot.

I’ve never been truly happy with my Kodak Ektachrome 100 GX shots in any other camera, I’d even considered selling my batch on. But the Holga just loves it. What will I do when I’ve run out of my last few rolls of it? What will I put in the Holga then?
