There is certain poetry in the images. A modified reality captured by a magic lens that impassively observes how time goes by; an unpredictable interpreter which bursts with color. When I was given the beautiful Diana Mini, I was not sure of what to do with it, of how the pictures would come out, or even worse, if they would actually come out.

Accustomed to immediacy and plane perfection of my former cameras, I found myself in a complete new world, a world that I have now become to adopt as my new home. I start shooting, I remember. One, two, three, four… the roll is over. I rush to the nearest lab and wait impatiently. In that moment I imagine, as if someone eagerly waits for a birth. After a long wait, I see the tremulous movement of a magenta colored curtain. A woman appears behind it carrying a little envelope. “Your pictures”, she says. Fearful and anxious, I take out the first picture… And wow!, I could not believe it: It was a sort of dream captured in photographic paper. And though I have always dreamt awake, now, I could see and touch the images, and hang them on the wall so that they remind me that reality possesses not only one, but thousands of facets, and it is bursting with color.

It is “free freedom”, paraphrasing Rimbaud. A non-adjustment to the photographic established standards. To be casual, imperfect, experiment, finish a roll and start a new one, to keep dreaming and learning making mistakes. And from time to time, letting out a yell of happiness after seeing the results.

Now, I take my Diana Mini everywhere: Parties, events, family reunions, concerts, and travels. And I do not only pretend to capture that decisive moment, but to go a little further, and let my camera freely interpret the world, filling the gray walls of a beautiful chance.

The Diana Mini is the ultra-compact, petite version of the Diana F+. This camera takes soft-focused, lo-fi images in 35mm and allows you to change between half-format and square shots with a flick of a switch. Get your own Diana Mini now!
