I can't believe a Canon 7 with a 50mm f0.95 ever retailed for under $500, that lens alone is worth $2,000+ USD.

That was $500 in 1966. It would be more than $3500 now accounting for inflation. That's how much our money has lost its value. It's poised to get worse.
