Returning to the World of Film: My Journey in 2012

I got my first digital camera in 2007, and promptly gave up film photography completely. Digital was an upgrade, right? Five years later, I returned to film...

Near the end of 2011, I started hearing about Lomography and the film photography movement in general. It piqued my interest, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to use film again. It was worth a try though. I knew my parents still had some film cameras gathering dust at their house, so I gathered up some camera cleaning supplies and film, and took them there at Christmas. I rummaged through their cupboards until I found an Olympus OM-2 SLR and an Ansco Anscoset rangefinder. Neither was very dirty, but I gave them a bit of cleaning anyway.

First, I tried the Anscoset. I remember trying to use this camera when I was in junior high. It was my dad’s first camera, and he used it on a trip to Europe when he was a young adult. I found the focusing just as difficult now as I did in junior high. This was the main reason why I never got an SLR until just over a year ago when I bought my first DSLR. After shooting a roll, I left it at my parents’ house.

Then, I tried the Olympus. I opened the back to load film, and quickly shut it after realizing there was a partially exposed film in there! When I got the prints back, I realized it was more than 10 years old because there was a photo of my parents’ elderly cat when he was a kitten! The expired film gave an interesting look to the photos. I shot the rest of that film, and another. But I wasn’t sold on film photography yet. My DSLR was only a few months old at that point, and I was having fun learning it. I did, however, take the OM-2 home to try it out some more.

Gradually, film found its way into my heart again. In spring, I started shooting more with the Olympus, and made a home on the Lomography website. I loved the look film gave to the cherry blossoms that I captured near my apartment.

I went to a camera sale put on by the Winnipeg Photo Club in June, hoping to find a fun film camera. I came away with a used Canon WP-1, which I soon tried out in my apartment’s pool. With these photos, I also tried scanning the negatives. It worked okay, but I still need to find a better method or equipment.

At the end of this year, I took a trip to Japan. I brought my DSLR, and intended to buy a film camera while I was there. I eventually found an Olympus Stylus Zoom DX 115, which I’m enjoying getting to know. You can read about my adventure here

For Christmas this year, and I asked for film, and a Lomography camera. I got some film, but I guess I’ll have to buy my first Lomography camera on my own. My mom found a couple more cameras in storage – a Minolta Explorer Freedom Zoom and a Hanimex VEF Zoom 110 pocket camera with a detachable VEF II lamp. I’m excited about buying the 110 Shoot and Scan Pack from Lomography and trying it with the Hanimex!

I still love my DSLR and will continue to use it, but film has definitely won a place in my heart. I want to continue trying different types of cameras and film. Some things I’m looking forward to in 2013 are trying redscale film, and putting together a very special camera which I bought in Japan. You’ll have to wait for another article to read about that one.

What film adventures are you looking forward to in 2013?
