Shutter Stories: My 2012 in Analogue

Every photo has a story apart from what was caught on film. Here, I present my 2012 in analogue photos and tell the stories behind them.

If 2010 was my annus horribilis and 2011 was a year for starting over, 2012 was a smooth-sailing journey, from start to finish. But, if there’s anything that defined the closing year for me, I’d say it’s travel. So, why don’t we get started with that now?

Travel

Vigan and Pagudpud

As usual, I started by year right by going on a trip for my birthday. This year, I was up north again, back in the mesmerizing historical town of Vigan. Then, I went further up north in the coastal town Pagudpud, the northernmost tip of Luzon, one of the main islands of the Philippines. What can I say, I love the beach, so I am almost always drawn to blow my birthday candles with the sea gently lapping at my feet!

But, the beach is only part of the adventure. I also went to see a centuries-old lighthouse, a row of modern windmills by the seaside, and a rock formation frequented by tourists, just to name a few!

Take a look at my Vigan, Pagudpud, and The Road to Pagudpud albums for more photos!

Singapore

I have always put off traveling out of the country year after year, not sure if I’ll ever be ready for it, and also partly because I dreaded the tedious process of applying for a passport. But, eventually, I decided to get myself a passport early this year, with the prospect of traveling to Bangkok for my birthday in the coming year. Little did I know that the first stamp on my passport won’t be of the Thai capital, or even next year, but of the prosperous city-state of Singapore a few months later.

One of the highlights of the trip was my first ever visit to a legit Lomography Gallery Store (as we still don’t have one in the Philippines). Even if I was in Singapore for only three days, I have to say that I had fun, and needless to say, my fingers were busy all the time pressing the shutter button/s!

Malaysia

I feel so blessed to have had the chance to have not just one overseas trip in a year! When I found out that one of my office buddies was planning a trip to Malaysia in November, and the budget was within reach, I decided to tag along. For a week, we traversed not one, not two, but three cities: Malacca, Kuala Lumpur, and George Town in Penang. I basked in history, learned much about a neighboring country’s culture, met amazing people, made new friends, and stuffed myself with some of the most delicious dishes I’ve ever tried in my life. Ah, to travel the world is pure bliss! It’s one of the best trips I’ve had to date; each day was an adventure, and there were so much to see, eat, and of course, photograph!

Head to my Melaka, Kuala Lumpur, and Penang albums for more Malaysia snaps! Terima Kasih!

L’Arc~en~Ciel World Tour 2012: Singapore

Actually, the reason I went to Singapore was to watch a concert, the Singapore leg of Japanese rock icon L’Arc~en~Ciel’s World Tour 2012. I’ve been listening to their music for more than a decade now, so watching them perform live was so…dream-like. Never in my fangirl days did I think I’ll ever get the chance to see them in the flesh! If you listen to Laruku (as they are fondly called) and have ever been to their concerts, I’m sure you enjoyed every minute just as I did!

I have a bit more photos from the concert right here! Domo Arigatou!

ToyCon 2012

I almost always reserve June for the annual Philippine Toys, Hobbies, and Collectibles Convention (ToyCon), and like last year, I managed to photograph a lot of interesting people and stuff on display during the event! Check out my ToyCon 2012 album to see the rest of my photos!

First foray into 110 photography

After I unearthed my mom’s long lost Minolta Autopak 450E, I finally had the chance to try it when I got my hands on a roll of Lomography Orca 100 110 Film. First times aren’t always very nice and I guess it was partly my fault that I didn’t even shoot outdoors, but, looking on the bright side, at least I am now sure that the camera is still in perfect working condition! I’ve written a review about it here!

Food in Film

I love to eat, but I also love taking photos of them! I shoot before I eat, perhaps much to the dismay of those who dine with me. But I guess they’ve learned to forgive tolerate me and my desire to immortalize these beautiful, picture-perfect dishes! I think I’ve taken more food photos this year that the past years! Above are just some of the most mouth-watering ones, and the rest you can find in an album called Food in Film which I will of course update with snaps of delicious morsels!

Feeble Attempts at Mastering Bokeh

This year also gave me an opportunity to try shooting with shaped bokeh snaps, for, while I am no stranger to shooting bokeh, I haven’t yet tried using masks especially made for shaped bokehs. I used an accessory set called The Bokeh Masters Kit which is quick and simple to use.

Bloom Arts Festival 2012

I have always known that Manila has been fostering a flourishing community of local artists, but going to the Bloom Arts Festival this year was the first time ever that I immersed myself in their creative world. For a night, my co-writers denisesanjose and geegraphy and I indulged in a diverse roster of visual treats, from paintings, sketches, photographs, and illustrations, to conceptual art and live sketches/graffiti art. It’s something I’m definitely looking forward to for the coming year. I’ve written about the event here, if you want to learn more about it!

So that’s it, everyone, my 2012 in glorious film photographs. I hope all of you had a great year too, and may 2013 be an even better and more fruitful year for all of us! Cheers!
