Christmas Traditions in Como, Italy

Como is a tourist town on a wonderful lake. As a touristy place, there is a rich program every year for the Christmas holidays! It's a great opportunity for the young and the young at heart to have fun!

The most important Christmas event in Como is called La Cttà dei Balocchi (The City of Toys), which organizes a series of public events. One or two weeks before Christmas there is a wonderful living Nativity Scene in the historical center of the city!

Live music and choir are a great background for the narration:

The actors are all volunteers, and the event is organized for charitable purposes:

In the squares of the city you can see some “timeless” carousels:

And (except last year) there is a great skating rink in the main square, Piazza Cavour:

There are some important exhibitions (In this case an exhibition of Santa Clauses):

You can have fun with some street performances (this was called “The Lady of the Snows”)

There are puppet shows about the Nativity for the children:

The Cathedral square (Piazza Duomo) is decorated by wonderful light games:

On the Christmas Eve, in the afternoon of December 24, there is a huge crowd under the Broletto Palace (besides the Cathedral). They are waiting to receive gifts from Santa Claus. There are gifts for all children, and every year are distributed thousands of gifts!

But this dog probably would prefer a ride in a park!

The same scene is repeated on January 6, in occasion of the Epiphany! The old “Befana” (a volunteer fireman) descends from the Cathedral roofs to distribute gifts to all!

This is also a great time to make a photographic reportage! All these photos were taken with my Praktica MTL 5, a Lomo LC-A, and a Zorki 4 cameras.
