It's megzeazez, aka DJ Megz, bringing you another fantastic list of songs for November! This month, in celebration of Lomography's 20th anniversary, I've asked my friend Ben Aqua to share five of his favorite jams from the 1990's. Ben will be the DJ at Lomography Austin's Anniversary party, so read ahead for a taste of what's to come!
In preparation for our big anniversary celebration here at Lomography Gallery Store Austin, I’ve asked one of our favorite local artists (/musician/photographer/badass/DWT participant), Ben Aqua, for a short list of his favorite songs, which truly stand the test of time! As a fellow DJ and admirer of the 1990’s, I (megzeazez) was super excited to receive his response. In addition to his list and a quick blurb for each song, I asked him to answer one really important question. Read through to the end of the article to check out his response!
Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit
The eternal teen angst anthem, 1991.
Weezer – Buddy Holly
The eternal teen love anthem, 1994.
Ace Of Base – The Sign
The eternal teen bubblegum-smacking anthem, 1993.
Madonna – Vogue
The eternal teen queen anthem, 1990.
Naughty By Nature – O.P.P.
The eternal teen sex anthem, 1991.
DJ Megz: What do you think makes 90’s music stand out from music of other decades…what makes it special?
Ben Aqua: 90’s music has a bad rep of being considered possibly the epitome of “cheesy” music, which is quite possibly the reason I am so drawn to it.
If “cheesy”, in this context, means extremely memorable vocal melodies, fearless camp/crossover sexuality, flamboyant baggy pants-wearing dancers with perfect fades, please cover my entire body/soul with CHEESE.
