Live Report : Wax Tailor at Gramercy Theater

Thursday 11 October 2012, the French atmospheric hip hop and down-tempo producer was playing live at Gramercy Theater in New York City. Here is a quick report of the show.

Wax Tailor is the alias of French hip hop producer Jean Christophe Le Saout. His music is a downtempo and really atmospheric hip hop/trip hop. Each of his albums features contributions from different artists, like singers Charlotte Savary and Sara Genn and rap artists like ASM and Mattic. His work could be compared to other producers and bands like DJ Shadow, RjD2, DJ Krush or Chinese man.

When I heard about wax tailor’s concert here in New York I was really excited about it as I knew his work from France and was happy to have the opportunity to see him playing live here in New York. The venue, the Gramercy Theater, is a beautiful concert room located in midtown Manhattan. Needless to say that most of the public was composed of French people and I was happy to discover that the concert was sold out. Wax Tailor’s show isn’t just a simple DJ show, as you could expect. On the stage there were many different musicians – one cello, one great flutist, one guitarist and one bassist/violinist. And different singers for the different songs: there were great performances by Charlotte Savary, Sara Genn and Mattic, a North Carolinian rapper who put the theater on fire! 

I wasn’t disappointed by the live performance of Wax Tailor. It was a great show and we could feel that he was really enjoying playing live in New York. The crowd was really receptive and the mood was great. Each different artist on stage gave their best and the performance was done with a great energy during about 2h30. Wax Tailor’s music sounds really cinematographic as he sampled extracted from movies, as he had done for his first album “Tales of the forgotten melodies”. He has also scored the original soundtrack for movies, like “Paris” by Cedric Klapisch. This show in New York was part of his tour to promote his new album “Dusty rainbow from the dark”. During the performance, video with animation clips were projected on the stage, bringing a real cinematographic atmosphere to the concert. If you want to know more about wax tailor’s work just visit his website. And if you have the opportunity to see it playing live, just go and you won’t be disappointed! 
