Lomography

Have you searched for photos tagged with 'happy' and 'sad'? While there are 54419 photos with 'happy', there are only 6984 with 'sad'. That is because we all like to share our happy moments. Maybe you've already heard it or you've just heard it now. This is the first line of a project I made. If you want to see the project, and learn more about the story behind the idea, keep reading.

It all began with just another Monday morning. I got up really early to go to school. I walked to school and entered the class. It was an obligatory class for me and there were no seats available. There was no space to sit in class at all. I got really upset and left. Then I saw one of my favorite teachers in the university, going to the class next to mine. It was a sociology class that I already took before but I wanted to enter the class anyway, and found a seat at the back.

His lecture was about Emile Durkheim’s ‘Suicide’. Then he asked the class, ‘Are you happy with your lives? What makes you sad?’ People started to utter some words, events that made them sad. Then I remembered the movie Beginners by Mike Mills. There is a graphic artist Oliver Fields who draws The History of Sadness.

As he was lecturing, I began to think about my own history of sadness, and I drew it. The guy sitting next to me was a little nervous. ‘You keep taking notes, oh my god, should I take that many notes in this class? Should I?’ ‘Yes, you should, but this is for something else.’ I said. It was fun.

Two days after that class, I had a copywriting course. We got our first assignment. We had to make a campaign and it should be something personal. I decided to make something about me and others. I had something personal in my hands, but I wanted to hear about other people. The rest is in the video:
