CopyCat Nat #8: Barakalofi

Recently inspired by beautiful lomographs, I'm back with a paintbrush in my hand! Take a look at this month's copycat painting after the jump.

It’s definitely been a while since I’ve done my own interpretation of a lomograph. Due to moving into a new house and starting my senior year in high school (as I’ve mentioned in other articles), I’ve been quite busy. However, I took some time to relax and take out my art supplies again.

Choosing the photo this time was quite easy; I was mesmerized by the beautiful photos taken by @barakalofi of a belly dancer girl and chose my favorite of the bunch to paint. To some, overexposure is harsh. For me though, the lighting in this photo is perfect and it makes the dancer look like an angel of sorts:

(See what I mean?)

Anyway, I chose to use a new set of water colors that I’d bought in Taiwan and had not had a chance to use yet. I turned to a new page in my sketchbook and began to paint!

Starting at the bottom, I painted streaks of color onto the page for the folds in the cloth. (Colorful photos always make me happy because I can use lots of paint, so this one was especially fun.) Making sure to match up with the lighting in the photo, I painted only part of the arm after the cloths that wrapped around her. I loved that the eyes were closed in the photo and the green tint on the lids. Painted the eyes, brows, and finished the head cloth. And done!
