Sporty Snaps: Open Water Swimming

Every year in our lake, there is this interesting Open Water Swimming event: crossing Lake Como, from Torno to Moltrasio. Here are some black and white photos of this event!

The crossing of Lake Como from Torno to Moltrasio is a non-competitive open water swimming event to raise funds for a charity for disabled children. This event is organized by the Provincial Section of the Italian Sports Center every summer. The swimming distance is 1050 meters, and this year, there was a record number of participants: more than 500 athletes!

After the registration, the athletes were directed to the pier so they could be transported in groups to the eastern shore of the lake, in the small town of Torno.

Each athlete received a numbered bag for storing clothes, a towel, along with his personal things.

A smile before the long swim!

After more than an hour, the athletes ready on the steps of the shore for the competition.

Other boats and canoeists have provided support during the race.

The best athletes made the crossing in about 20 minutes, while the others took more than an hour.

As a non-competitive race, there were no official winners. But what’s important is the love for the sport and the unity in friendship and charity!

All photos were taken with a Zorki 6 camera and a Fuji Neopan 1600 film exposed at 1000 ISO and developed in R09 Spezial (Rodinal Special).

Despite the modern looking boats, except for the Sport 13 Whaler, the setting and the light give this series a certain patina of classicism! Congratulations! We have in Costa Rica open water swimming too, albeit in shark and crockodile patrolled waters!
