Ancient Photos, Past Lives

I was privileged to be asked to scan some negatives for my friend, and I agreed, however, these were negatives that belonged to her recently deceased grandmother. I was taken aback by the ancient memories, read on to find out more.

When she’d given me the envelope of negatives, I wasn’t expecting anything special. Maybe some recent photos taken before her grandma passed away…? I was completely wrong! I got home and opened the envelope to find two smaller envelopes that looked something like a photo lab would give you after you got photos developed. Except that they were completely vintage looking and very old!

Peeking into the smaller envelopes, I found not 35mm negatives, but 120 [which I was not expecting]. All slightly faded looking, with silvery tones. ‘Ahh black and white!’ I thought…

Wrong again, I couldn’t tell from the film, but the scanned results brought varying tones of black and whites and sepia looking photos. I didn’t even know that that was possible!

To be honest, I don’t know the history of the photos or the people in them. I had contemplated different backgrounds while I was scanning and browsing through them, but I could never find something that fit right.

I didn’t think it was the right time to ask someone who had just lost a loved one. But maybe sometime in the future, we’ll be able to talk about it and I will finally be able to put stories with strangers in these faded negatives.

My Wife and I visited Lihue a few years ago. Found it to be a wonderful place.
