We spend a lot of time wandering around and looking at things: Before shows, after shows, on the way to shows, at rehearsals...etc. Come to think of it, being in a band is really all about waiting and searching for ways to kill time. We decided that we would do this with a camera in hand and let you see the things that catch our eye.
Photo taken with This photo is a complete mystery. No idea where it was shot, or when (besides knowing it was sometime during NXNE). But the colors and the mystery makes me so happy. It’s like seeing a ghost and then forgetting you saw it.
Photo taken with This photo was one that happened very naturally. It was just a random walk down Spadina from one place to another during NXNE. You see many things on Spadina at any given time that aren’t worth taking a photo of: Drunks, crazies, and people in Batman suits (for no reason). Seeing a dude walking around with trombone however was well worth documenting.
Photo taken with This photo encapsulates my generation. It was taken at the Silver Dollar Room. Nothing makes us happier then a pretty bartender, with a nice smile handing you a cold pint, on a night out on the town. Who needs to the see her eyes really?
Photo taken with This photo was taken at a NXNE, during the show. Cai.ro played on our first night. It was at a small bar in Kensington Market called “Play Dead Cult”. It was low lit, hot and packed. The only light came from Ikea lamps that let off a warmish yellow-orange glow. The photo came out awesome, like a beacon in the darkness.
Photo taken with This photo captured the grungy, early 90s quality that I adore. There were some random bands setting up before their set during NXNE. It captured the darkness, the NXNE logo on the shirt in the background, and the band member smiling. It all adds up to the sweaty and exciting feeling bands get while playing these festivals.
Photo taken with This is Nini Muggins. He is a massive Maine Coon house cat. He’s majestic, and a bit crazy. He was going to be on the Cai.ro t-shirts but he was too majestic for that. He likes to chill in front of my window that looks out to a brick wall. Don’t really understand why but hey, who am I to judge?
Photo taken with There are many beautiful houses scattered across the Greater Toronto Area. It is not often for me that a house (or its features) catches my eye, but this particular door made me stop in my tracks. I took 4-5 steps back to look at it, and take a photo of it. I don’t know what made me take notice. Something about it was special and worth documenting.
Photo taken with This photo holds a certain “night out drinking with fun people” aesthetic. It is possibly because that’s exactly what was going on at the time. Aimless wandering and candid photos makes for the best subject matter.
Photo taken with This is our friend Louisa. She is a wicked human and looks really great in this photo. It’s dripping with angsty punk rock meets grunge attitude and could easily be a promo photo for an artist from the early 90s. We liked the early 90s a lot.
Photo taken with This is a photo of Cai.ro jumping on Matt’s jeep (the drummer of Cai.ro) which is affectionately dubbed “The Gas Finder”. We immediately found out climbing onto a dark green jeep that has been roasting in the sun for hours were quite unpleasant.
Photo taken with There is nothing better than summer time street love. This couple was sharing some PDA (Public Displays of Affection) with everyone outside the Silver Dollar Room, late Thursday night during NXNE. I felt it important to get a picture of their love (or lust).
Photo taken with This was a moment at the Kensington Market where I saw something that reminded me of being a kid. It was a little colorful wind fan under some trees with light sneaking through. I immediately felt 7 again. Nostalgia is a killer. It gets me every time.
Photo taken with I was walking on College Street to an event and saw some fresh graffiti targeting “beloved” Toronto Mayor Rob Ford. I snapped a quick picture and headed to the event. I then double exposed the image with the crowd at the event and the outcome was this fun image of Rob Ford’s name and what looks like a party around a panel van. What’s more fun then a panel van party I ask you?
Sometimes you can find something to admire in the simplest places. Places you normally wouldn’t look. I’m glad we have so much time to kill because we get to be constantly on the look out for things to like. We hope you like the things we like too.
