Fourth of July: At the Pool With My Underwater Amphibian

This past Fourth of July was spent at my girlfriend's grandparents' pool. So I thought what not a better time and place to try out my new underwater camera, the Hanimex Amphibian! Read on to see the results!

In an earlier article, I wrote about New Jersey’s largest and longest running rummage sale. This past visit in May, I swept up all of their expired film at only 5 rolls a dollar along with some cool cameras like the Hanimex Amphibian – that big orange underwater camera you see in the picture above!

The Amphibian is an interesting camera, with an automatic shutter speed and manual aperture ranging from f2.8 to f16. It’s also got a built-in flash which is awesome! Focusing is tricky though cause the viewfinder isn’t paired with the lens, so you have to estimate the distance to your subject. Anyway, not knowing if it was going to work, I loaded it with two AA batteries and a roll of expired Fuji Superia Extra 400 that I got at the rummage sale and started shooting!

Fourth of July was just a relaxing day at the pool. We played some catch…

…and took turns jumping off the diving board.

My camera was quite a spectacle at the pool but it was fun passing it around for everyone to try. And the best thing of all is that it floats!

Unfortunately, a bunch of the underwater shots didn’t come out too clear but I got a few.

Hopefully I’ll get some more underwater shots the next time around. Oh, and in case you’re wondering how this camera shoots far from water, here are some shots I took at a Mets game!
