44 days in Europe with 54 films: Now an Analogue Addict

A 44-day trip to Europe with my LC-Wide opened my eyes to films. I have never derived so much satisfaction and thrill from taking, developing, and anticipating photos. And suddenly digital was part of my past, and it was effortless.

Now a film convert, and it’s all because of the LC-Wide.

Previously, I had four Lomography cameras, but I was never confident with them. So I always brought out my Canon G12 along. In May, the LC-Wide caught my eye. What was more captivating were the photos it created. I had to get it, and so I did.

Just two weeks of practice with the LC-Wide, I embarked on my 44-day trip to Europe with it and my Canon G12. Initially my G12 was often seen, taking repeated shots of my LC-Wide for fear that the photos will not turn out well. After I had my first few rolls developed in the second country I visited, Italy, the G12 was never seen again. I was a full analogue tourist.

The photos were intriguing, captivating, unpredictable, fascinating, and emotional. As these photos were taken a few days ago, some caught me off guard as I had no recollection. Despite it not being perfect with occasional correct mistakes, film grains, and the slide of colors, that was perfection on its own. They were also so imperfectly and unpredictably beautiful that they require no editing (unlike my friends who are still in the midst of editing their photos from their digital cameras). Such photos not only evoke nostalgic memories but surreal ones that are worth keeping and remembering.

Not only is the aftermath of developing a film exciting, but also the thought of being able to choose from so many different slides and negatives. Some films give different saturation and colors that are unique and breathtaking.Throughout this entire trip, I have tried many different slides and negatives, which have never crossed my mind or have never crossed my sight. Fujifilm Provia, Fujifilm Sensia, Deluxe, Agfa CT Precisa, Kodak Ektar and many more. In total, I have used 37 slides and 17 negatives, amounting to a total of 54 films. A hefty price to pay, but pictures were worth every penny.

To say that I am a film convert is an understatement. I have became an addict. I will not pass any photo shop without going in to look at the films and cameras. I will not stop Googling about the different old vintage cameras there are. I will only carry my analogue cameras. I capture almost every moment worthy on my film. In addition, I have added a Waltax Junior and Argus V-100 to my collection of cameras in London and am considering getting the Kiev 4A and Fed 2.

Digital camera? What digital camera?

Now, the only things keeping me going in life are analogue cameras, films, and slides.

The Lomo LC-Wide boasts the newly-developed 17mm Minigon Ultra-Wide Angle lens. This 35mm camera wonder is the perfect companion for your photo expeditions. It produces eye-catching splashes of colour with astonishing saturation and contrasts with the added versatility of 3 different formats.
