Walking Around in Bandung

Bandung is my hometown and the city where I was born. I grew up and got to know Lomography in this city through my best friends. I have so many memories of Bandung, from the bad times through good. Since 2007, I've been documenting the city, so let me show you my personal perspective of the Bandung I've known through the years!

Of course, some of you Bandung people already know about Bandung or maybe even know the city better than me. I’ve been documenting Bandung since 2005 when my Dad gave me his Canon AE-1. But, I almost forgot about that camera, and for some time, I used a digital pocket camera to document Bandung street life. I wasn’t aware at that time, but two years later, a good friend of mine introduced me to Lomography and I started going crazy, shooting the city with my first lomographic camera, the Fisheye No.2.

For months, I just used my Fisheye No.2 to document my everyday life in Bandung. One day I decided to buy a second-hand Holga 120CFN, making it my second lomographic camera and my first 120 camera. The Holga, which is a square-format camera, is fun to use. Gorgeous vignette and vivid colors come out from this classic camera. So this is me, adi_totp who, for four years, has been wandering around with two cameras and having a good time. Walking alone or walking with lomo friends during outings with Bandung lomographers is always a fun time for me.

Bandung is big city in West Java and it’s famous among local and international tourists because people love to shop here. There are so many shopping destinations here, though as not as many as Indonesia’s capital city, Jakarta. Still, people love Bandung; I don’t know the reason why, but as someone who hails from this city, I see that people still walk here and there. Motorcycles, cars, buses, and public transportation are still dominant in the roads of Bandung but I still see many people in the side walk.

Now, it’s already 2012, the mid-year to be exact. So many lomo-walks, so many lomo-outings have been held in Bandung and so many rolls I spent to document this city. Have I had enough and bored to shoot Bandung? My answer will be “No!” There are so many parts of the city that I haven’t yet explored, so if a Bandung lomographer comes to ask me, “Adi, let’s have a lomo-walk!”, I will allocate my free time to join him. Every time I go for a lomo-walk, it would be in a different destination and a different experience too because I go with different lomographers too. Sometimes, I stumbled upon places that I have never been to and I often go to places that I have always took photos of. That’s the fun part of going out and shooting in Bandung. You just can’t predict what’s in front of you, you just have to get ready and shoot!

I think walking and shooting is something that we lomographers do all the time; maybe it’s the same routine for some of us but I love it so much. Whether heading out in the morning to enjoy the cool Bandung weather, at noontime under the sun with no clouds in the sky, or just walking to relax in the afternoon while enjoying sunset in the city—why not go for it?

One has to enjoy Bandung and I enjoy my walk through its streets while holding one camera in hand and two or three cameras in the backpack. I just keep looking up down and towards during walking, just in case I spot something interesting, and usually I just fire away my shutter! Click! Click! Click! What a great feeling! I’m sure all of you have experience this.

How about your city? Do you like to walk around its streets as well?

Thanks for a joy ride through the many faces of Bandung . Considered as the summer capital being a place of cool weather, Bandung for Indonesians is what Baguio City is for Filipinos. It is indeed a very charming place.
