On July 12, 1962, a group of young English musicians billed as “The Rollin’ Stones” had their first live performance at a jazz club called Marquee Club. With the historic gig’s line up of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Brian Jones, along with Ian Stewart, and Mick Taylor, the musical career of the iconic band was set to stone. The group’s influence would span five decades, over 100 singles, and more than two dozen studio albums.

The band’s name, according to Richards, came while Jones was in a phone call with Jazz News. Asked for a band name, Jones noticed a Muddy Waters LP on the floor and replied with an impromptu name: “The Rollin’ Stones,” after one of the tracks in the said LP. Thinking it was more fitting, Andrew Loog Oldham, the band’s manager during their early years, changed the band name’s spelling to “The Rolling Stones.”

The Rolling Stones released their first single, a cover of “Come On” by Chuck Berry, almost a year later on June 7, 1963. Soon, they were on their way to becoming prominent figures of the Swinging London in the 1960s, and revered music icons many years later in their career.

To celebrate their amazing feat, the band members will be present in a photo exhibit that chronicles their musical journey at Somerset House in London.

Now, let’s watch The Rolling Stones perform “Satisfaction,” one of their first hits from the 60s, in the American musical variety show Shindig!:
