CopyCat Nat #7: mikahsupageek

After quite a few paintings, I tried a new approach on this month's imitation: a pencil sketch! Want to see how it went? Read more about it after the jump.

Not to say that painting gets old, but sometimes, change is good! I’d been waiting for the perfect photo to do a sketch of. I wasn’t entirely sure of what I wanted the subject of the sketch to be for a while…a flower? Camera? Maybe even a face?

I was revisiting one of my favorite lomohomes, mikahsupageek, and browsing through his popular photos when I noticed one of the many amazing photos of his girlfriend hunterjasmine. It was a gorgeous shot; the mood, the colors, the everything. I remembered seeing it and loving it previously, but not with the thought of my series in mind. Absolutely loving the photo, I had to re-create it.

I began with the hair; bright red, and twisted up in a way that I couldn’t quite figure out how to do, but loved anyway. The dark points fading into the highlights. Streaks and lines, held up by a floral headband. Adding and blending, I outlined the face shape and glasses. Dark, full eyelashes and eye brows above the frames. Behind the small cup, hiding the lips and chin. The neck, partially hidden as well, and into the scarf and jacket. Arm, hand, fingers, rings, cup. Lots of shading and checking back with the original. Surprisingly, this sketch seemed to come quite easily, I didn’t run into many problems. Touched up some small parts and began the out-of-focus background. Most of that consisted of thick, wide strokes and lots of blending. I actually finished this drawing on the airplane when I was going to Taiwan to visit my relatives! It was a great time passer-byer, hope you all like it! :)
