Today in History: Peter Carl Fabergé Was Born

On this day in history Russian jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé was born! The brilliant idea he's remembered for hatching? Well, his namesake Fabergé eggs of course! These exquisite creations were staples of Russia's Imperial Court and are still some of the most beautiful relics around! Let's celebrate like it's Easter circa 1885!

Happy birthday Peter! Is there a birthday egg we can feature for you?

The designs he’s most famous for is the Easter egg. Wait, not the chocolate eggs you put in your mouth. Actually, you better not be trying anything of the sort with these eggs! Crafted out of precious metals and laden with gemstones, the Fabergé egg was designed as an Easter gift.

The first Fabergé egg was made upon the request of Tsar Alexander III for the Empress Maria Fedorovna – his wife. This egg was the start of many more to be displayed at the Imperial Palace in Saint Petersburg as when the Empress saw her gift, she immediately appointed Fabergé the “goldsmith by special appointment to the Imperial Crown”!
