Go Green This Earth Day 2012

As we celebrate Earth Day this 2012, let’s look back at how it started and what we can do to celebrate with the whole world.

It was 1969 when Gaylord Nelson, the Earth Day founder, thought about the idea of celebrating Earth Day. He was pushed to do it after seeing the effects of the Santa Barbara oil spill. Part of his agenda was to make the people aware of the ill effects brought about by the hard done to the environment. And so on the 22nd of April the following year, millions of Americans went to the streets to take part in environmental rallies and protests.

By 1990, Earth Day went global and over 200 million people from over a hundred countries participated. As the years passed, more and more countries participated for the conservation of nature. The goal to have a clean environment still continues today, and with added urgency. The effects brought about by climate change can evidently be seen in the world. Have you done your part to participate in keeping the world a liveable place for the future generations? There’s a lot you can do.

Increase Awareness
Increasing your awareness on the things that you can do will help the environment. By increasing your awareness, you can avoid doing things that can be detrimental to the environment. At the same time, you can do little acts everyday that will promote being green.

Take Part in Local Projects
There are surely environmental activities planned within your own community. Contact your community officials and ask how you can take part. There may be tree-planting projects, community clean-ups, and other activities dedicated to saving the environment.

Go Green
There are little things you can do daily for the conservation of nature. Segregate your trash at home, make use of recyclable materials, eliminate the use of plastics, and use your bicycle instead of your car. These are things that you can do throughout the year, not just on Earth Day.

Let’s take a look at some nature shots from the community:

These are just a few ideas. What are the things that you do to save the environment? Leave a comment below. For more information, visit Earth Day 2012.
