UK CitySlicker Claire: I Love My Schwinn

For most people all over the world, February represents the month of love. For my CitySlicker february task therefore, I decided to write about the newest love in my life - my bike!

I have been waiting to get a Schwinn cruiser bike for ages – you know the kind that looks good when you are posing alongside a beach but isn’t 100% practical when navigating inner city roads? Yeah one of those. Except I live in Leeds, nowhere near the coast, and as I arranged my bike through the “Cycle to work” scheme I will be expected to use it to navigate inner city roads. All of that is just detail, which pales into insignificance when you actually see this thing of beauty. Anyway, once all the financial arrangements were sorted with my employer, I just had to go and get the bike. The only place I could find the one I wanted was in Wigan, so a day off work and a daytrip to Wigan it was! This involved some pub fun, a difficult service station visit and ultimately fish and chips.

All in all I found Wigan to be quite a strange place really, having never been there before. Maybe twizzer88 can help me out here but we struggled to find anything to do!!! First we consulted an online pub guide and decided to go to the best voted pub we could find, for a spot of lunch. Where we ended up was in the middle of a n industrial estate, outside a pub that looked semi-abandoned. When we tried to eat there, they didn’t accept cards so we had to abandon that mission. Though not before taking a few snaps.

Then we figured this Wigan Pier gets a lot of press, so we will go there for lunch. This was not as happening a scene as we had hoped and the only pub we could find was closed on a Monday and Tuesday every week – today was Monday. Again it looked nice so I took a few shots and we moved on.

Then we decided if we drove in the direction of the bike shop we would probably stumble upon something, but alas this back fired when we got all the way there and hadn’t found anything suitable. Outside there was a pub (“Sorry we don’t do food anymore”), a cafe (“Oh you have just missed them, they just pulled the shutter down”) and a KFC (one of our party is vegetarian and it was over run with school children). We ended up eating fish and chips in the cafe-come-bike-and-pram-shop-all-under-one-roof, which was actually very nice – although it had taken so long to find somewhere we were just happy to have anything.
And then it was bike collection o’clock!!! Both Dave and me were collecting our bikes that day and they were the same Schwinn makes but obviously different models. Mine is midnight blue with white wheels and a bell and a basket and I love it!!!!! We had to get it back on the car across the M62 – which was no easy feat but we made it with them strapped to the back of the car.

I love my bike and although it has been a bit of a learning curve (it feels pretty different to a mountain bike, and I haven’t ridden one of them in 10 years properly). It is also a really nice thing to do with my other half now the nights are getting lighter and we can go to the park together.
