Super Selfies: My Very Own Guinea Pig

I’m the type of guy who is normally on the other end of the camera. I like shooting, but once in a while, I do switch over to the dark side and appear in my own photos, especially when I want to try something new.

I don’t know if it also happens to you, but every single time, I want to try out something new: a new tip, a trick, or even a new camera. Most of the time, I end up using myself as a guinea pig.

When I first got my Diana+ with its Fisheye lens I wanted to try out both things at the same time, so I said to myself, “What the heck, you’re sitting on a terrace at the beach; just put the lens on, take a picture and will see what comes out…”

Then, another thought came to me. “Mario, you’re using black and white film, let’s try some pinhole action!” I wasn’t quite sure how long I had to leave the shutter open, but hey, that’s how we learn stuff, by trying!

The results weren’t great but I wasn’t going to stop there, then came the "Hey, what if I use the Colorsplash Flash on one hand and take a picture with the other, since on the Diana+ there’s no hot shoe for a flash, these are what came out:

The years have passed and new cameras have been added to the family. Just recently, I got a SuperSampler and last year I won a Colorsplash so the obvious thing that happened was, “Okay, let’s go to a sunny place for the SuperSampler…”

“…and let’s try some wacky night shots with the Colorsplash!”

Last but not least, I like taking a self-portrait when I take a Lomography workshop. It’s my way of saying, “hey, I learned something new today!”
