UK CitySlicker Anafaro: London and Lomography

I cannot begin to explain how exhilarated I am to be a Lomography CitySlicker for London! I love Lomography and I love London. Combining two of the greatest loves of my life in one single experience is simply fantastic. And to be honest I wouldn’t have it any other way as the two are intrinsically connected, as it was when I moved to London that I truly fell in love with Lomography.

A little about me: my name is Ana, I’m a very-trigger-happy Portuguese girl living in London.

I’ve been in love with photography ever since I can remember, but the torrid love affair with Lomography began when I moved to London, back in early 2010. All it took was one Lubitel workshop in the Lomography Gallery Store in Soho and I was hooked!

Over these last two years, I’ve been building on my Lomography camera collection—I own something like 15 cameras now. Recently, I decided to take things further and I’m starting to develop and scan my own films and I also have a bunch of other DIY projects with friends, such as building our own pinhole cameras and trying really vintage techniques, such as silver gelatin dry plate photography.

The reason why old-school photography techniques and Lomography captured my imagination in a way digital photography never did is the fact that it brings back the surprise and the unexpected element to photography, what we’ve got to know as “the analogue beauty.” The artistic process of photography doesn’t have to be limited to the moment you click the shutter button, but there is still a fair bit of art, experimentation, serendipity, and magic involved in the choice of camera, film and processing.

Being a Lomographer in London is exciting and challenging. London is truly a city of the world. I’ve been terribly in love with the city since I moved here and it never disappoints me! One of the most amazing features of this city is its capacity to make you feel immediately like you belong here. It accepts you, embraces you, never judges you. No matter who you are, what you do, what you wear, your likes and dislikes — you always find your niche somewhere in London. And there is always something new happening around town, something new to be shot, from a fresh angle — and I always carry a camera with me, so I am always ready to shoot any action.

London is quite the safe haven for analogue photographers: there’s dozens of photography shops that sell and develop film, it is almost impossible to go to one of the many markets in London without stumbling upon a vendor with loads of vintage cameras on sale and your can get a hold of virtually any type of rare, vintage quirky film to experiment with.

London is a photogenic city which loves to be the subject of our Lomographic love. If you come to London, you should be ready to shoot meters and meters of film.

No other city is such a poser or is quite as much loved by Lomography cameras as London.
