Backstage Pass to Canada's Rock Band: Arkells' Photo Journal

Mike DeAngelis, the vocalist and guitarist of Canada's favorite rock band Arkells, is also the photographer/Lomographer of the band. He collected his snapshots of his memories of the band tour with the rest of the band members, Max Kerman, Anthony Carone, Nick Dika, and Tim Oxford! Read on as Mike tells in his own words, the tales of Arkells during their tour!

A number of these photos were taken during a trip to New York City in October of 2011 to play a show at the Mercury Lounge. Around the corner from the club is the legendary Katz’s Delicatessen, where friendly service, delicious smoked meat, and a one of a kind atmosphere make it a must for any trip to NYC. After the show and a few drinks with friends, we took a cab back to our hotel in New Jersey — unfortunately our cab driver was immediately lost the moment he left Manhattan, and ultimately abandoned us at 2 AM on the side of the New Jersey Turnpike. As we walked back to our hotel in the rain, I pulled out my camera and took a snap of Nick and Tim. At the time, it was pretty wet and miserable, but in the morning it all seemed pretty funny to us.

The rest of the photos document the sorts of places bands spend most of their time while on tour — curled up in the van, wandering around truck stops, goofing off in soundcheck, and a lot of hanging out in dingy club basements and hotel rooms. In the case of our November Western Canadian tour, we also got to spend some time at The Warehouse recording studio in Vancouver BC, which is one of Canada’s finest studios and a real treat.
