Auckland Lantern Festival 2012

Albert Park hosted the 13th Annual, Lantern Festival, an amazing spectacle of light and colour from the smallest chinese lanterns to vast dragons and animals.

Hundreds flocked to this years annual Auckland Lantern Festival, a wonderful occasion, and an opportunity for Aucklanders and New Zealanders of all descents to revel in the amazing beauty of an Asian tradition. There was a great deal to see, do and eat. This year the event ran for three evenings, 5-10 PM from Friday, 3rd of February, until Sunday, 5th of February. Stage shows ran each evening throughout the three evening event and featured amazing readings, storytelling and music.

During the event, the park is divided into three main areas: the food stalls, where all sorts of wondrous food can be purchased and sampled; the stage arena; and a walk around the lanterns.

This year, I chose to limit my photographic coverage to the highlight of the event: the lanterns especially imported from China for the event.

The lanterns are themed, many showing lifestyle traditions.

Others depicting legends:

Some depict traditional art:

And some, just amazingly detailed and in some cases animated!

The event is held around the same time every year, so if you missed it, make sure you get down to the next. And bring plenty of ISO 800 – 1600 films, and cash for the delicious food!
