Love at First Lomo: My First Love, Holga 135 BC

Meet the one which brought me into Lomography, the one who caught my eye: it's the forever loving Holga 135 BC! Read our Love at First Lomo story after the jump.

Having been interested in photography for quite a few years, I have never encountered the word ‘Lomography’ until I stumbled upon the Holga 135 BC. The strong vignetting and slightly soft focus pinned my eyes on the screen. I wanted to know more about this magnificent camera with such stunning results! Yes imperfect, but stunning!

Right at that moment, I have decided to get one for myself and I am loving it more and more now. I bought mine from Thirtysix, a camera shop in Singapore where you can find lots of analogue cameras and films. My first shooting with the Holga 135 BC was at the Universal Studios Singapore, which is a few days after I bought it.

Loaded with Kodak EBX in it, I started my first step into Lomography. It felt so good to press the shutter and listen to the clicking sound of it. It is so original and pure. I also love to turn the advancing wheel for the next frame, it’s like a sign of keeping the captured memories and ready for the next. And rolling the rewind knob to take the film out is something I’ll never experience If I hadn’t met the Holga.

I also experimented with it a bit by making my own splitzer from shoe box and attached it on the lovely Holga. Photo shooting has never been this fun before and things like this cannot be done using digital cameras. There’re so much to do with the Holga and it makes me wanting to explore. Because of the Holga, I started to explore new and unfamiliar places around and notice things which I did not care much before.

This whole analogue thing made me realize that taking photos is not just about having perfect pictures. It makes us think and recall the actual scene when we finally developed the films. It helps us to remember stories behind every photo. It teaches us that imperfection is a reality in life and it’s actually beautiful if you appreciate it.
