Love at First Lomo: My Little Vivi

It didn't take me long to fall in love with my first analogue camera, and it was definitely love at first Lomo! Funny enough though it wasn't my first choice of camera, but I'm glad it's the one I went with.

It’s not hard to pinpoint where my love for Lomography began, as I still remember it like it was yesterday. It’s strange in a way though, as my first Lomo love was actually a substitute for the camera I really wanted — the LC-A. What I ended up with was a Vivitar Ultra Wide and Slim.

I can’t remember what first brought me to the Lomography website or the LC-A but I suspect it was during some random internet browsing. I was immediately hooked yet at the same time put off by the cost of the LC-A. It was at the same time that another internet source advised a UWS as an alternative. I quickly bought a used one off eBay, just in time for my holiday.

Without going into details of the photos I took and the holiday itself (I covered this in an earlier article), it’s safe to say I was hooked. I felt that the shackles weighing me down in trying to create the perfect digital picture were gone, and a new freedom to simply shoot took over me. This, in part at least, was down to the extremely simplistic nature of the UWS.

I quickly fell in love with this little, plastic low-tech camera, and revelled in its simplicity and lovely wide lens. If that wasn’t enough, when I had the pictures developed I fell in love even more as I found something special in each and every one of them.

That was love at first Lomo for me — cheap, wide, simple and great results, what more could I ask for!
