Love at First Lomo: Black Corner is not Cheating!

My love towards Lomography grew more and more ever since I bought my first analogue camera, the Holga 135bc. Read about my Love at First Lomo story after the jump!

I have never took notice on analogue cameras. I was actually consumed by the digital world. I even bought a D3000 so that I could take sharp and so-called beautiful photos.

My discovery towards analogue photography and lomography started when I noticed a shop named Analogue Kaki that opened at a new mall last year. All those fancy, adorable, cute and beautiful cameras immediately caught my attention! That was when I started Google-ing Lomography and found myself falling in love with it. This also made me recall back some memories of me following my parents to the camera shop to get our developed films and make a photo album! It felt like it was such a long time ago.

At first, I wanted to get a Vivitar UWS camera, but after looking at different cameras and asking for opinions, I got a Holga 135BC

Maybe because I was new to films and the camera, most of my photos turned out blurry, underexposed, and some even turned out headless! Only a few of them turned out the way I wanted. Even so, the photos don’t look ugly or anything like that. I really like the feel, and how each photo is a one of a kind.

Then, I found out that what I see from the viewfinder is not exactly what I get, and that I should tilt the camera a little bit higher when I take the shoots. I used a color flash and tried on the bulb mode when in indoors. This time I used a color slide film, Kodak Elitechrome 100.

The photos really blew me off especially the last two, which turned out reddish.

I found out since I bought my Holga 135BC that it never stopped giving me surprises. I find myself full of excitement and glee when I bring my films for developing. And there’s also the anxiety while waiting for them to return. The joy is so overwhelming! The best part is looking at the photos and wondering when did I actually take the photos. It always seems to find a way to amaze me.

Even though some people think that the Holga 135BC cheats because of its black corners, I don’t really think so. The black corners is like a part of the camera. There are a lot of people who mask their camera intentionally for screaming effects and beautiful colours, so why call it cheating when its built to do so?

My Holga changed my way of viewing the world. Though I’ve only had it with me for less than a year, I love it much more than my D3000. Nowadays. I actually find myself searching for films almost everywhere.

I love my Holga 135BC, and even though I now have a Recesky TLR, I still find myself using my Holga way more often.
