Carnival of Venice
The Carnival of Venice is one of the most popular carnivals in the world. Held annually, this carnival celebrates the entrance of spring. The tradition dates back to the 14th century. Every year, people gather and throw street parties wearing masks as a disguise. It is said that the masks are worn to ensure that everyone who takes part in the festivities are seen as equals – rich or poor.

There is also the Cologne Carnival in Germany, a street carnival which lasts 6 days, beginning on a Thursday (the fat Thursday or Weiberfastnacht), and finishing on the next Wednesday, (the Ash Wednseday or Aschermittwoch). The official launch is made on November 11 at 11:11am, but the real festival is in February (and it's happening right now in Cologne by the way!!)
It's very festive, everybody is in the streets everyday from 9am to late at night, there are many parades (Rose Monday parade is the highlight of the week, ghost parade goes on Saturday and nobody knows where it will be, which is quite fun to look for it...) And on Tuesday night, the carnival puppet is burnt to end the festivities.
