Love at First Lomo: Falling in Love with Diana Mini

Story how I got charmed by my Diana Mini, Love is in the Air edition and how we spend our moments together. Read on to know more about my analogue love.

I like to call myself an aspiring writer but I am also a student from Slovakia studying in Vienna, the heart of lomography. You might think Vienna is the place where I got to know the lovely community of lomography but it was not so straightforward.

The first time I saw a Lomography camera was when I had small reunion with my friends from high school. We made some waffles and my lovely friend, Jana, brought tiny Diana Mini, the Valentine’s Edition ‘Love is in the Air’ which she got for her birthday (actually, her birthday is on Valentine’s Day). When I saw her (I like to refer to Diana as ‘she’ because she is the lady among cameras), I totally fell in love with her. I simply must have it. Since my birthday is on February too, it was a quick and spontaneous idea (the best idea ever) to ask my parents to buy it for me as a present. When I told my mother, she was surprised I asked for a camera but when I said it’s an analogue camera she seemed very sceptic and even tried to persuade me to choose something else. Glad, she did not stop me.

My very first roll of film was light exposed since I was too lazy (or too drunk, I can’t decide) to read the instructions but the first actual film was amazing, full of genuine lomo photos- nice moments, colours and also double-exposures.

Since then I take my Diana everywhere and it is funny what strangers think of her. The most frequent questions are:

  • Does it work?
  • Is it a toy camera?
  • Is it one-time use disposable camera?
  • Is it a waterproof camera?

I understand all the questions except the last one. Why would it be waterproof? Maybe people think that because she is blue with little clouds. But anyway, people want to get know my Diana and they are surprised that I am using films.

My favourite objects to take photos of are my friends, people I’ve met, my dog and also I like when I am photographed with my Diana. I love the half-frame format because I can make these two frames somehow “communicate”. I also like experimenting with double exposures.

Recently I got my Fisheye No.2 and old Flexaret from my grandfather. I also want to buy an LC-A someday but I still love my Diana most and I think I will despite all the little troubles I have with her sometimes (the never-ending problems with loading films, problems with flash and a film sometimes gets stuck too).

What problems with flash do you have? Sometimes it doesn't work?

@antoniodezner my original flash stopped working so I have to ask for new one. But people from Slovak lomography store were so nice so it was no problem ;)
