Flashbacks on Film: Jackie the MGM Lion

For this second installment on the Flashbacks on Film series, the spotlight is on Jackie, one of the MGM Lions.

If you’ve watched a lot of movies from the film studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM), you won’t miss that production logo that appears just before the movie starts. The logo features a roaring lion! Since 1924, there have been 5 lions used for the logo – Slats, Jackie, Tanner, George, and Leo. The photo above shows Jackie, the MGM lion used by the studio from 1928 to 1956.

Jackie is known as the first MGM lion who roared, since MGM was to release their first sound production in 1928 entitled White Shadows in the South Seas. As you can see on the photo, Jackie is on set with a camera operator and a soundman during the recording session. The opening logo lasts roughly 15 seconds where Jackie gives a soft growl, 2 louder growls, and then looks to the side. See the video below.

The MGM logo wasn’t Jackie’s only Hollywood stint. He also starred in hundreds of movies, including several Tarzan films.
