The Old Wild West

The Wild West was a period in cultural history that began just after the Civil War, and from the 1800’s just up until the early 20th century. Read more to learn about the Old Wild West.

Out where the skies are a trifle bluer,
Out where the friendship’s a little truer,
That’s where the West begins;
Out where a fresher breeze is blowing,
Where there’s laughter in every streamlet flowing,
Where there’s more of reaping and less of sowing,
That’s where the West begins.

Out Where the West Begins, Arthur Chapman

During the Old Wild West, plenty of pioneers went on their way to the west in hopes of having better lives by searching for land, gold, and in some instances to escape the law. They went to states that are west of the Mississippi River. When talking about the Wild West, what often comes to mind are cowboys, saloons, and gun fights. These are just a part of the lives they lived back then. During that time, the people lived on a few resources. You may have heard of the popular gun fight at OK Corral, and the Donner Party or of famous individuals like Billy the Kid, Buffalo Bill, and Jesse James. Their stories prove just how wild it got in the west. See the gallery below for some photos from the Old Wild West!
