My Analogue Bucket List for 2012: 12 Analogue Resolutions

I've always loved making lists. I used to make bucket lists every new year but then somewhere along the way I stopped doing them. But this year I was inspired by Lomography when I read this was a requested post for the month of January. So here is my list of 12 analogue resolutions and/or aspirations for 2012.

I love making lists. I make lists of everything! I make lists of things I have, things I want, things I need to do, things I have done, etc. So – in no order of importance – here is my list of the 12 analogue related things I’d like to acomplish in 2012:

1. Film Swaps
I’d love to do doubles with someone. I love browsing through the photos on Lomography and seeing sets of doubles between users. I especially love it when they have the same theme but are shot by people in diferent countries. This year, I really want to try it myself.

2. Try The LomoKino
I was fascinated by the Lomokino as soon as it was released but I haven’t been able to try it. I definately want to have a go at it. Maybe attend a Lomokino workshop at my local Lomography embassy? Maybe buy a Lomokino myself? I don’t know, I just know that 2012 can’t go by without me shooting some movies with it!

3. Make My Own Pinhole Camera
I’ve wanted to make my own pinhole camera ever since I read this tutorial. I’ve just bought one of those D.I.Y Recesky TLR camera’s you have to build yourself and I think that will be a lot of fun, but I still really want to build my own pinhole camera from scratch.

4. Shoot 35mm Film On My 127 Film Cameras
I own two beautiful vintage 127 film cameras and while I’ve loved shooting with 127 film it is hard to find and expensive. I’ve been keeping the 127 spools from when I take the film to get developed and this year I want to try to respool 35mm film onto them for some sprockety fun with my old 127 format cameras.

5. Street Photography/Populate My Photos
I read this on another user’s 2012 Bucket List and I could really relate to it. I love street photography and I keep wanting to populate my photos by going out to public places and shooting people in candid situations but I’m always too afraid someone might realize I’m taking photographs of them and start yelling at me or something like that. I’ve just found out about this wonderful previously undiscovered 1950’s street photographer named Vivien Maier and I felt really inspired by her so this year I want to get out there on the streets and populate my photos. Check out some of her work:

6. Develop My Own B&W Photos
I think this must be a wonderful experience and I definately want to start doing it this year.

7. Write More Letters
Hardly anybody writes letters anymore and I think that is such shame. I used to have penpals and I loved getting their letters in the mail. I now have family and friends abroad and I keep buying envelopes and postcards to send to them but I never do. This year I want to leave my laziness behind and start sending all the pending letters and postcards I have lying around, plus more.

8. Make My Own Zine
I love zines and I have loads of them. I’ve attended zine symposiums and workshops but I have never gotten around to making my own zine yet.

9. Read More Books… The Analogue Way
I love reading books and I read alot. However, now that I have an iPad it is so much easier to have loads of books in it and take your iPad on vacations or anywhere you go instead of taking a bag full of books. Because I’ve been reading so much on the iPad I have lots of unread books around the house. I really want to commit to leaving my iPad books aside for a little while and reading the physical books I own that I haven’t read yet.

10. Try Letterpress Printing
As a graphic designer I’m fascinated by letterpress printing. I really wish I could try it someday although I know that is not easy and it is one item on my bucket list I probably won’t have the opportunity to accomplish. I bought this really beautiful ring with actual letterpress metal type. I just have hope that is not the closest I ever get to trying letterpress printing.

11. Buy Vinyl Records From Portuguese 80’s Bands
I collect vinyl records and I own quite a few. I mostly have 80’s vinyl records because not only are they much cheaper but all my favorite bands are from the 80’s. I don’t have many portuguese 80’s records though, and we had some very good bands back in the day. My resolution is that if I buy more vinyl records this year they have to be from portuguese 80’s bands!

12. Trade Mixtapes
I used to make alot of mixtapes in the 90’s along with handmade covers for them (the photo above shows some D.I.Y. mixtapes I used to buy from an indie distro in the late 90’s, those were not made by me). I want to get mixtape penpals and trade mixtapes this year. I’ve thought that it would be cool to trade with fellow lomographers and send printed photographs we had shot ourselves and each song on the tape would be related to a photograph.

Let’s make 2012 a year full of creativity and analogue love! If you liked this article, go ahead and check the rest of analogue bucket lists for 2012 submitted by the community! Of course, you can also submit your own inspiring analogue bucket list for 2012 and get more piggies!

this is so inspiring! i agree with you about the street photography. i always get afraid of taking pictures of strangers in the streets, because they might get mad at me!
