Synesthesia is a collaborative new series by Yours Truly and BOOOOOOOM. In each installment, one visual artists pays homage to their favorite 'sonic' artist. In the second installment, which we're featuring today, a young British illustrator salutes his inspiration - the experimental musician and super sampler Panda Bear!
Animal Collective’s founding member, Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox), is illustrator Tom Edwards’ sonic artist of choice, the man who’s gotten him to ‘hear colors’ and ‘sing shapes’.
In the single ’Bro’s’, from Panda Bear’s third solo album ‘Person Pitch’, Edwards swears he hears a sample of Homer Simpson! We concur! Just give it a listen below (you’ll come to the sobbing, groaning, Homer sound-alike, who’s perhaps even the real deal, 2:44 minutes into the track).
In light of this ‘revelation’, Edwards wrote Panda Bear the following letter.

Edward’s colorful artwork, shown below, is very unique in subject and form though resembles the American folk quilt, and draws upon symbols from medieval times. Juxtaposed with the use of popping, highlighter colors, which are more indicative of the modern world, his creations speak volumes and can be appreciated and interpreted across cultures and ages.
Synesthesia (n): A condition in which one type of stimulation evokes the sensation of another, as when the hearing of a sound produces the visualization of a color.
