A Sad Story About a Duck

At home, I do not pay attention to ducks, because there are so many of them in the parks. But this one we met in Istanbul was very special. Read on to find out why.

We met the duck on our first day in Istanbul. I was very astonished because I wondered, why was a duck standing in the street in front of a restaurant and a hairdresser? I said to my girlfriend, “Well, I don’t think the duck will have a long life there”.

The next day, when we passed the corner, the duck was standing there again! We were very surprised. Also, the next days after, we always saw it. The duck seemed to disappear magically only at night, but always comes back the morning after.

We really started liking this duck. It always helped us to find the way back to our hotel (enter the way at the blue mosque, left, right, follow the street until the duck, then right again…), and every time we passed we took a picture of it. The duck was a bit shy, trying to walk one or two steps away, quacking gently.

I wondered where this duck was coming from and why it was standing every day at the corner of Mimar Mehmet Aga Cd and Akbiyik Cd. It never ran away.

One day, I saw it entering the hairdressers shop, and then we discovered, that the duck was spending the night in a box in the shop. Just a simple box with a hole at the side, big enough for allowing the duck to watch the outside world.

The last morning, on our way to the airport, I wanted to take a goodbye-picture of the duck. I was wondering why it wasn’t standing at it’s place, searching with my eyes for it. And suddenly I saw it: the box was thrown out on the street, run over by a car, a bunch of plumes around.

What happened to the duck?

I guess he was brave and left this street because this is no nice place to live for a duck. He now lives on a lake with many duck friends and people stopping by to feed them!

@trashpilotin: then I'd have to rename the story in "a happy but (maybe...) true story about a duck" ;)
