Kyle Bean and His Clever Creations

Who would've thought that drinking straws could be an underground map, that egg shells could be made into a chicken, that matchsticks could be turn into insects, and that pencil shavings could be used in making portraits? Designer Kyle Bean from England thinks so!

Kyle Bean is a Brighton-based designer specialising in hand crafted models, set design and art direction. His works are a combination of resourcefulness and wittiness. Below are some of his amazing projects:

Kyle Bean personally likes visual puns. One of his projects, What Came First?, is a funny take on the well known saying. He thought that it would be a nice ironic twist to actually make a chicken from eggs. “It has taken a couple of failed attempts and I have eaten quite a few poached eggs and omelettes in the last couple of weeks, but I have finally finished the sculpture,” Kyle says.

Another project of Kyle Bean is called Stick Insects. He used to love building things out of matchsticks and lollypop sticks as a child so he thought he’d have a go at using them again. According to Kyle, “Strangely, I’m finding it necessary to use my teeth to help create the curved matchsticks. There is probably a better method, but this seems to be working!”

His Pencil Shaving Portraits series is a contributory project wherein various artists, such as Victoria Ling, participated. This particular series is especially made for Wallpaper*’s Handmade issue.
