20 Foods You Either Hate or Love!

There are many more acquired tastes and foods that either have crowds flocking to it or running for the hills from it! Though after trying each of the 20 on the list, I'll confidently say, without disclosing my biases, that you'll either love or hate 'em!

  1. Durian
  2. Century Egg
  3. Caviar
  4. Escargot
  5. Bitter Orange Peel
  6. Spam
  7. Asparagus
  8. Oysters
  9. Turkish Delight
  10. Black Licorice
  11. Anchovies
  12. Sushi (raw)
  13. Seaweed
  14. Tripe
  15. Eggnog
  16. Vegemite
  17. Haggis
  18. Nattō
  19. Foie Gras
  20. Tofu

Pungent or fragrant, slimy or dry, canned or fresh from the sea. Raw or precooked, hard and chewy or silken – crumbling apart with a touch. It might be hard to believe that these are the wide range of qualities ascribed to the list of 20 foods, drink and some ‘disputed’ items above, that are alluring to some, but revolting to the next.

I’ve witnessed some cases in which a friend’s most disliked food was masked with sugary goodness to the point its strong smell and flavor wasn’t recognizable or fried to the point its natural soft and soggy state was no more, and watched the person in question look horrified for a split second and then realize “what the heck” and proceed to rethink their aversion!

Sometimes our bodies and taste buds have become accustomed to one spectrum of foods that are so different from those found in another culture that we cannot easily adjust and that’s when our gag-reflex often kicks in! Though, after some significant time spent with the food, we might develop once-in-a-while cravings and then begin seeking it out on our own!

If you think about it, most of the foods listed above aren’t usually eaten in their ‘raw’ state (except for sushi, which still requires ‘preparation’ such as cleaning and slicing), but are cooked, spices added and are presented as part of a larger dish! So we wonder, maybe we’d change our minds if we tried them in their natural states!

Can you add to our list? And let us know which side the item falls on in your dichotomy!

Hm, I tried most of them (except durian, century eggs, tripe and haggis) and there's not a lot I didn't like. Only Vegimite (yuck!) and natto (double yuck!). For a European, visiting Asia can be very adventurous foodwise. Dried squid legs as a snack anyone? Tiny dried fishes in your bowl of peanuts? Strange... But okay once you try it. I'm really curious about what European food Asians think weird.

Hats off to you for trying all those foods! Yes, dried squid and (I can only think of another small, dried, fish dish that's also a snack) the Korean Myeolchi bokkeum are also tastes that, if not familiar with, could be strange! I suppose, in my case, the 'salt' and 'sweet' condiments used for snacks, such as potato pancakes, change from region to region. I'm used to 'salty' toppings, but find the 'sweet' pairings - such as apple sauce - to be 'different'!
