The Gift of Love and Lomo

Every year, my church participates in an organization called Operation Christmas Child. We pack shoe boxes for kids in foreign countries that don't get Christmas presents. Millions of people from around the world pack these boxes with all kinds of things. I chose to pack mine with love and lomo!

Operation Christmas Child is part of an organization called Samaritan’s Purse which was started and led by Franklin Graham. The mission of Operation Christmas Child is to demonstrate God’s love in a tangible way to needy children around the world. Millions of boxes are sent to kids filled with necessities, school supplies, toys, and other things.

This year, I chose to send my box out to a 10-14 year old girl! I filled it to the brim with stuff that I thought a girl that age would like; perfume, a mirror, a purse, stickers, a sketch book, pencils, erasers, and a few other things.

But this time, I wanted to share my love for Lomography along with my love for Jesus in this box. So I decided that I would send a disposable camera with a letter and a photo of me explaining what it was for. I wanted to send this camera so that the girl who received it would be able to take pictures of whatever she wanted and send it back to me for processing. Then, I would print the photos and send them back to her! Now, I know that it is entirely possible that my plan won’t work, but I figured it was worth a try. In the letter, I wrote a little about myself and gave instructions on what she would need to do. I included my address and said that she could also write letters to me if she wanted to.

After finishing the box, I pulled a rubber band around it and put it along the wall with all of the other Christmas presents! I’m sending this box off with love, and hoping that everything will work out. But if the camera doesn’t make it back, that’s okay. I think that if she has the camera, she’ll be able to experience all of our love for Lomography.

I strongly encourage all of you to pack boxes for this organization, and for more information, check out the Samaritan’s Purse website!

You can send your boxes at any time to this address:

Great idea. My family did five boxes this year. My only concern would be the child being able to get the film developed.

@gvelasco That's what I was worried about, so I included my address in hopes that she would be able to send it back to me for processing and prints. Then I would send it back!
