Analogue Goodies Gleaming in Gold

Our analogue goodies and vintage finds are prized possessions to us as they are. However, certain luxurious versions, gleaming in gold, make them even more precious and eye-catching. Take a look at some notable gold versions of film camera models after the jump!

Since its discovery by man, gold has long been the color of wealth, power, and royalty. This bright yellow metal charmed man way before recorded history began, making it a highly valuable and favored precious metal used in jewelry, fashion, currency, and other purposes.

Gold has also been synonymous to luxury so it’s not so surprising to find a “gold version” of nearly everything. It used to be limited to jewelry, but eventually, there came clothes, shoes, bags, fashion accessories, kitchenware, and many more in rich, golden hues.

Even vintage film cameras were not exempted from this gold craze. While they were brag-worthy status symbols in their own right back in their heydays, some vintage camera models had extra luxurious models—gleaming, golden, and screaming of rarity. These gold cameras, manufactured in limited numbers, were typically created in celebration of a camera maker’s milestone and other special occasions across the globe.

Let’s take a look at some lovely examples:

Pentax LX Gold, launched on August 25, 1981, was produced in celebration of the ten-millionth SLR camera produced by Pentax. Both the body and the SMC Pentax f/1.2 50mm lens were 18-carat gold-plated and designed with brown leather. Only 300 pieces were made, 200 for sale in Japan, and 100 for sale in the international market

Leica M6 Gold editions were made especially for the Jubilee celebrations of two of Asia’s monarchs in 1992: the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Thailand’s monarch, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and the Silver Jubilee Celebration of Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan of Brunei Darussalam. For King Bhumibol’s Golden Jubiliee edition, only 700 of the 24-carat gold-plated cameras were made, sold at $10,000 each.

Leica MP Gold, a limited edition gold-plated camera with red leather and 24-carat gold-plated Summilux-M 50mm f/1.4 lens, was unveiled on June 2, 2010 in China. It was created in celebration of the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. Only 60 of these cameras were made, and priced at $30,000 each.

Hasselblad’s Anniversary Camera was released in 1998. It was a gift from Victor Hasselblad AB in commemoration of Hasselblad’s 50 years of camera system. The Hasselblad 503 CW was dressed in red and gold, and equipped with Carl Zeiss Planar CF 2,8/80 mm lens and golden bayonet ring.

Of course, some of our very own Lomography cameras also have their very own luxurious versions! The LC-A+ Gold Special Edition is one of the most note-worthy of these. Launched a few months back, the shiny golden La Sardina Metal Edition cameras are also among the finest analogue goodies to hit the Lomography Shop this year!

Some Lomography favorites now come with a taste of luxury. Introducing, the ever classy Diana F+ and her little sister, the Diana Mini, and the fun Fisheye2, eye-catching and glistening in gold!

Go ahead and check out Lomography’s latest golden beauties, Diana F+ Gold Edition, Diana Mini Gold Edition and Fisheye No.2 Gold Edition!
