Today in History: November 11 in the Entertainment World

Today, November 11, 2011 is considered as a special day around the world, with the triple "11" seen as an auspicious sign by many. Let's take a look at the entertainment world in retrospect and revisit some significant events in film and music, and also some Hollywood birthdays!

Film

On this day, 17 years ago, the movie adaptation of Anne Rice’s acclaimed novel entitled Interview with the Vampire was opened. The vampire film, directed by Neil Jordan, boasted three established Hollywood heartthrobs among the main stars: Brad Pitt as Louis de Pointe-du-Lac, Tom Cruise as Lestat de Lioncourt, and Antonio Banderas as Armand. Then child star Kirsten Dunst starred as the child vampire Claudia, which was her breakthrough role. The film, co-written by Anne Rice herself, was a major success and sparked a renewed interest in the book.

Music

November 11 was also a significant date in the music industry for several years. Some of the notable November 11 events in music history include:

  • Releases by John Lennon and Yoko Ono (“Plastic Ono Band”, 1970), Michael Jackson (“Heal the World” single, 1992), and KISS (“Rock and Roll Over”).
  • Free concert by Metallica in Philadelphia, PA in 1997
  • Performance debut of Velvet Underground at a high school dance in Summit, NJ held in 1965
  • The Doors lead singer Jim Morrison was detained in 1969 for “interfering with the flight of an intercontinental aircraft and public drunkenness.” Charges were later on dropped.
  • An experimental novel by Bob Dylan, entitled Tarantula, was published in 1971.
