Analogue Glimpses of a Digital Music Video Shoot

In these times, music videos are given the electronic treatment by being shot digitally and undergoing post-production through computer technology. As an analogue enthusiast, I think it's okay to save those SD cards for another time, and retain some analogue elements by capturing behind the scenes moments on the set with a film camera.

My day job in print media is a great place to explore creativity. On the side, I work with a production company that creates music videos as an art director, stylist or production designer (sometimes as all three at the same time). Through this, I get to extend creativity with moving media, and while it’s handy to bring a digital camera to take behind the scenes photos, I opt to bring my favorite analogue camera(s) to sprinkle some analogue flavor to a digital activity.

I’m sharing with you some analogue behind the scenes shots of one of the recent projects I was involved with. It’s a music video for a Philippine band called “All for Patricia” for their song “Sulyap” (Sool-yap), which means “glimpse” or “glance.” The song tells a story of a girl admiring the object of her affection from afar, but all she can do is glimpse or steal glances, because she clams up whenever Mr. Wonderful approaches. Who hasn’t experienced something like that, right? Love, after all, can reduce even the most outspoken of us into a stammering, wonderful mess!

The music video’s setting is in a vacant warehouse. The band members each strut their own stuff with their instruments, and as the video unravels, you will see that the storyline develops into something with a little humorous twist at the end. While the entire music video was shot digitally, I had my trusty LC-A+ by my side, shooting those moments that go beyond the final cut. Loaded with Kodak EL Elite Chrome 400 (first roll) and Kodak Ektachrome E200 (second roll), the resulting photos were shots with rich colors intrinsic with cross-processing. I love those colors! The shades of green, blue, deep blacks plus pops of red and orange inspired us to color-grade the music video in those hues…a fine example of analogue setting authentic tones which are then replicated in digital formats.

Since the song is penned in the band’s native tongue (Tagalog), here’s a translation of the chorus so you’ll get an idea of the song’s message

Sulyap (Glimpse)

To glimpse at you (Sulyap sa’yo)
Even from afar (Kahit malayo)
That’s all I can do (‘Yun lang ang kaya ko)
I am amazed by you (Nabibighani na yata ako)

Even if you speak a different language, I hope you enjoyed the music through the melody and instruments (dig those awesome bass lines!), and with these analogue BTS photos, I hope you had a good glimpse as well.
