Haunted Locations: Catacombs of Paris

The Catacombs of Paris hold the skulls and bones of approximately 6 million people. Without a doubt, this underground grave site is one of the most haunted places in the world. Read more about the catacombs after the jump.

In the Roman times, people were buried on the peripheries of cities. This all changed when Christianity rose and they dictated the dead to be buried in churches and cemeteries. However, problems arose with the increase in the mortality rate. Cemeteries became overcrowded and only the rich people had the sources to bury their dead in churches. As a solution, mass burial grounds outside the city were set up in the 18th century.

The catacombs are a series of tunnels that run underneath the streets of Paris. During the first few years of the catacombs, bones of the dead were merely deposited there. It was Louis-Etienne Hericart de Thury who was responsible for renovating the catacombs and arranging the bones of the dead. The bones now cover the catacomb walls like a carefully planned work of art.

The Catacombs of Paris is open to tours. Many tourists have ghostly experiences while navigating through the underground labyrinth. There have been reports of dark shadows, feelings of being followed and being touched, and others back out in the middle of the tour due to an uneasy feeling. There also pictures of alleged apparitions and ghostly orbs caught on camera.

Here are some photos of the catacombs from one of our community members:

I visited the catacombs in the summer of '10. It's truly remarkable. I wouldn't describe it as haunted, myself, but walking down the enclosed spiral staircase at the very beginning felt a bit claustrophobic and had me wondering: how far down is it? On a side note, I noticed I have a photo of the exact same skulls in the 2nd picture by @elvismartinezsmith here:…)27606546031
