Tower Green, located in the Tower of London, was a venue for executions. Queens and British nobles were executed in that very place. With the events that took place there, one can truly say that the place is haunted by the spirits of the dead.
“Gentle visitor pause awhile
Where you stand death cut away the light of many days
Here jewelled names were broken from the vivid thread of life
May the rest in peace while we walk the generations around their strife and courage
Under these restless skies”
- Brian Catling (Tower Green execution site memorial)
The Tower of London is said to be one of the most haunted places in Britain. During the medieval age, the Tower Green has served as an execution chamber, a place of torture and also a prison. Tower Green was reserved for Royal executions to shield the person being executed from the shame of the jeering crowd. Among those who were beheaded there were:
- Lord Hastings
- Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex
- Lady Jane Grey, Uncrowned Queen for 9 days
- Jane Boleyn, Viscountess Rochford
- Queen Katherine Howard, 5th wife of Henry VIII
- Margaret, Countess of Salisbury
- Queen Anne Boleyn, 2nd wife of Henry VIII
Because of its bloody history, there have been reports of ghostly beings spotted in the tower or within the area. Anne Boleyn’s ghost carrying her own head has been seen walking around the tower. Lady Jane Grey is also said to haunt the tower every year on the day of her execution, February 12. Guards have also seen apparitions of Sybil Penn, otherwise known as the ‘Grey Lady’, a servant to the monarchs. Royal ghosts are not the only ones seen in the Tower of London. In the 1800’s, there have also been sightings of ghostly bears that would vanish into thin air when the guards would attack with their bayonets.
Some of the supposed hauntings were investigated by psychologists to no avail. All they discovered was that visitor reports of hauntings happen in the same location.
These are only some of the hauntings that have been reported. Surely, Tower Green will continue to be the focus of hauntings for many more years to come.
