Brommi and His Weapon of Choice, the Lubitel Universal

If you noticed, LomoHome owners here always have their camera shelves stacked with not just one camera, but with their entire collection. But have you ever wondered which one is their favourite?

A camera is not just a mere tool that can capture light within a fraction of a second. And if you ask any Lomographers out there, surely, they would agree by the fact that it is more than a gadget that eats a lot of film, rather an extension of their own perception – a kind of an analogue weapon that can truly satisfy their Lomographic yearnings just by pressing its shutter button!

Name Julian Brombach
Lomohome brommi
Weapon of Choice Lubitel 166 Universal

Why is this analogue camera your weapon of choice?

The Lubitel was my first medium-format camera and it was love at first sight. At the beginning, I used medium format films and the initial results were convincing. But I must admit, these 120 film rolls are quite expensive for a poor pupil like me. This is why I modified my Lubitel with some cardboard so that it can be loaded with a 35mm-camera in panoramic format. Seeing the exposed sprockets really makes my shots extra special! In addition, with this camera you are an eye-catcher! It is so big, it could be a weapon ;-)

Would you rather take photos of people or take photos of objects and sceneries?

I can’t decide, I think I prefer both! But I tend to shoot portraits with this one. With the Lubitel you can adjust the right distance and achieve good sharpness – you can also easily focus on your subjects! This camera is well suited for photo shooting and is surely often inside my camera bag!

It could be just a cheap plastic toy camera or the most luxurious vintage rangefinder you have, either way, it is your weapon of choice! Want yours to be seen here next week? Then just drop us a line at jason.delosreyes@lomography.com and you’ll get to show everyone what your Lomo snaps are made of!

The Lubitel 166+ is a loving recreation of the Soviet-era classic. Based on a design that dates back over 60 years, this camera is updated with new features like the ability to shoot both 120 and 35mm film. Shoot mind-blowing images with the Lubitel 166+, available in our Online Shop.
